Supporting Women with Cancer
Together Helping Women (THW) is a registered charity to support women who do not have insurance, are not covered by the health system (OHIP), and live with a low-income, who have been diagnosed with cancer and need support during their journey.
A cancer diagnosis and treatment is traumatic for everyone, in particular for women without resources. Cancer can affect a woman that has no way of caring for herself; or it may affect a mother who not only needs to take care of herself but also her family, and home. The lack of social, emotional or financial support can cause delaying, compromising or neglect of treatments and recovery in a woman’s life.
THW helps women who need support in different ways. The purpose is to give them the capacity to concentrate on their medical treatments and recovery. Support is given depending on the need of each woman individually and the severity of the need. Support may be financial to assist in the purchase of food, medication or accessories needed, as it can also be help with cleaning of their home. The provision of support in these areas reduces stress and allows women to focus on their own well-being.
Founder Ana Pereira is a survivor of breast cancer. After going through her diagnosis, treatment sessions and recovery, she saw that there was a need to support women diagnosed with cancer that had a lack of resources. Then she decided to look for a way to help and together with Kelly and Carmen formed Together Helping Women.
Together we will help women in need. We need your help!
Together Helping Women (THW) is a charity that will give support to women that do not have health insurance, are not covered by the health system (OHIP), and live in a low-income situation, who have been diagnosed with cancer and need support during their journey.
To achieve this goal we will:
1. Raise funds annually by means of events and donations.
2. Build relationships with organizations and people who help women and their families during times of need.
3. Prepare volunteers who have the desire to help and assist these women.

My name is Ana I was born in Portugal in the City of Lourinhã. I am married I have two children and I am a cancer survivor. In 2013 I was 49 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was a very busy woman, and my day to day activity was taking care of my family, our home and working. The feeling of being diagnosed with cancer is something too much to describe in words. The feeling was as if the right to live had been taken from me, and perhaps it could even be the end of my life, I only had two choices I either to fight or to be defeated.
I had surgery to remove my right breast and part of my left. I went through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, something that was very painful, times of great suffering, much solitude although I was surrounded by family and friends, and I had to fight with all my strength to survive.
In October 2014 I was turning 50 years old, after having surgery and completing all the treatments, my family and friends wanted to have a party to celebrate my birthday and the end of a long journey, but in my heart I wanted a lot more than that. I wept for women who were living in the same situation that I had experienced, and I wanted to help in some way. I was privileged because I had my spouse’s benefits that paid for the medications that were not covered by OHIP, but many women have no insurance and no benefits, and that is a big obstacle.
At that point we decided to make it an event, but with a different purpose. The invites were sent with a special request that anyone who would like to give me gifts, would give a monetary gift that would be used to help women affected by cancer, at this time I still did not know what I was going to do with the funds raised, but they were going to help women in need. This is when I had the idea of a charity, and the idea began to flourish in my heart, I began to communicate this with my family, people, doctors, and lawyers and the idea transformed into a project and came to life. After a year and a half the project became a reality.
On April 27, 2016 a charity called “Together Helping Women” was registered here in Canada.
I will always be grateful to all who made a donation at my 50th birthday celebration, everyone’s donation helped to give life to this charity and we will together help women.
